 Matthew Fogle:

On the Brink

Release Date: Feb. 24, 2007

1. Cool Release (3:28)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

A punk kind of sound with lots of imagery in the lyrics.  Baptismal almost.  This song was written one day when I was making fun of skateboard music, and the chorus was "Oh, you can ride with me on my skateboard. Yeah, we can feel the breezy air. Oh, you can ride with me on my skateboard. We'll go to the land that we don't know where."  Haha, aren't you glad I changed it?

2. In the Meantime (5:00)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

For my first girlfriend after we broke up in January of '00.  "I will wait" is basically the message here.  I recorded it and delivered it to her mailbox on Valentine's Day.  But it took longer to record than I expected, and by the time I put it in her mailbox, it was 10pm at night.  She got it on February 15th.  Romantic, huh?  Regardless, she told me a few years later that she never listened to it.

3. Weak (3:37)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

My song from November 30, 2006, after I saw a gorgeous girl in Wal-Mart.  Yes, Wal-Mart.  I was too scared to talk to her, so I left the store depressed that I would never see her again.  I wrote the song, and out of an amazing turn of events, I met her the next day.  She came to our show that night, and I laid one on her later that evening.  You thought I was going to say something else, didn't you?

4. Till I See the Sun (4:05)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

Written in the spring of 1998 for a girl who I was infatuated with for over a year.  She possessed something that nobody else saw, but she was so shy that it was hard to approach her.  The thought of her consumed half of my high school life.  The beautiful fish I let get away, but quite honestly, I probably could've caught.  I did once ask her if she was at Thompson's Food Mart the night before.  She said, "No."  That was the gist of the conversation.

5. Silent Waters (4:43)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

This one is about a sublime experience I had one night on The Belle of Louisville.  During the night of Bellarmine's annual "Ball on the Belle" Halloween Party, I just stood by the rail looking toward the Indiana shoreline, and just watched the lights on the water, felt the cool breeze, and breathed in the steam from the boat.  I also got a kiss for a pack of cigarettes I wasn't going to smoke, and a hug from another chick later after the ride.  And I didn't drown, which is always a plus.

6. Leading Breeze (3:45)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

One of my earliest songs written in the fall of 1996.  I wrote this one in Algebra II, after my teacher, who was talking about boat trajectories, said "Blowing in the same direction."  The song took off in my head, and I wrote the entire melody that day.  It took several years to bring the lyrics to where they are now.  It's a very symbolic work, with religious implications.  I know, I know - The cliche of divine inspiration and boat trajectories.  It happens all the time.

7. Fall Away (5:13)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

At least something good can come out of a breakup.  This one is for a girl I dated in 2005, and is another one of those songs about not letting go.  She never got to hear this one.  I feel that the opening chord structure is the most relaxing thing I've ever written.  I hope she's happy with whatever redneck she ended up with.

8. Lost Heart (Instrumental) (3:20)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

I wrote this when I met the beautiful girl from Fall Away  in '05, whom I eventually dated for a few months.  She never got to hear it, because I probably played it more after we parted ways than ever before.  Thus, the name "Lost Heart."  Check out the lyrics when you play the song.

9. Freedom is Our Lives (5:58)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

The anthem.  Verses than contrast choruses.  Getting beat up versus freedom.  The bridge I wrote as another song about the Heaven Hill fire in '96, thus the "Burning Flames" part.  I felt it fit this song perfectly though.  And be sure to clap along, unless you're driving.

10. Amen (7:10)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

Ah, yes...good ol' Jillian, my best friend.  Once a girlfriend.  I can't forget any song I've written for her.  This one was written in 2002, after we broke up for the second time (5th time).  People seem to like this song, especially for the bridge part - the spiel, if you will.  Every album needs a 7-minute song.

11. Two Months Till May (5:44)

Play:  96 kbps   192 kbps

If I had one song to submit to be in a movie, this would be it.  I love how the guitar and strings work together on this one.  This is my earliest song, once called "Oh Life," written, I believe in 1995 or the summer of 1996, long before I ever got a guitar.  I once had a revelation to write a song about a child dying of a disease, and how he felt as he laid there dying at such a young age.  I'll leave it at that and let you hear it.  No other song could end the album like this one.
